Twin jewelry boxes

This is a pair of small walnut boxes I made for my wife as a Mothers Day present. They started life as one box but I didnt like the proportions. The math didnt work either - two boys, one box. The joke now is that my wife can use one box for the left earrings, the other box for the right...

The boxes are about 3 1/4 in. square and 2 1/2 in. tall. I cut the miters on the tablesaw using a dedicated miter sled. The boxes have plywood bottoms, glued in. The panels in the tops are (I think) yellowheart. Terrific luster and shimmer, and a great contrast with the walnut.

Everything was assembled at one time during glue up and then I sawed the tops off at the bandsaw. A little light sanding on the underside of the tops and the top rim of the boxes cleaned up the bandsaw cuts nicely. Im pleasantly surprised at how close the line between top and box comes to disappearing. The tops are held in place with a glued-in insert underneath.

Kits Jewelry

Ive been writing about the woodworking shop, the metal shop, the music, the yard and garden and theres one thing I havent written about yet except in a few scattered mentions, Kits jewelry. Shes been making stuff like the items pictured for years now but no longer has a website, she doesnt much like sitting at the computer. You can however, get an idea of the various styles that she is known for from the photos below. She finished the necklaces and earrings above today. They are made from Nova Scotia beach stones in the style of Turin, a famous 20th century jeweler. One of her clients supplied the stones and will be taking the finished items back to Nova Scotia with her for her friends and clients there. Anyway, if you are interested or have a project youd like to discuss, give her a call at 802-867-0139. She also does fabulous repairs and can do amazing reconfigurations of your antique jewelry ...
